Denier: Unit of fineness for rayon, nylon and silk yarns that is based on a standard of 50 milligrams per 450 meters of yarn.

Density: Refers to the number of stitches or rows of stitches in a given area. Also called Stitch Spacing. See picture.

Detail: Design components with high definition or intricate work.

Digitize (Digitizing): Input of digital points to a computer. Creation of embroidery designs electronically by inputting points to a computer with embroidery software programs capable of translating the input to stitches for an embroidery machine to read and sew. Often interchanged with Punching, digitizing is a modern term for creating embroidery designs. See Puncher.

Digitizer: See Puncher.

E-Stitch: Stitch used for edging applique. Composed of running stitches in an E shape. See picture.

Editing: Software capability that allows the user to manipulate elements of a design, combine designs and lettering, designs, move points and stitches. Functions vary by manufacturer.

Emblem: Embroidered badge or insignia of identification. Commonly has a finished edge done on a Merrow Machine. The finished emblem is frequently attached to goods by sewing or heat seal. Also called a patch or crest. See picture.

Enlarger: 1. Person who creates the enlarged embroidery design cartoon. 2. A projector used to enlarge the original artwork for the cartoon.

Enlargement: See Cartoon.

Expanded Format: Melco design file format where each stitch is recorded. Generally cannot be enlarged or reduced more than 10% without the use of Stitch Processing.

Eyelet: A small hole edged with embroidery stitches. See Boring.
